Did you know that festivals in Africa contribute to over 20% of the country’s revenue?
Apart from the customary rites or rituals, dancing around the town in a colourful mask and attire is an event people would either love to watch or partake in. These festivals have been instrumental to a lot of positive development in Africa mostly especially in tourism.
The role of festivals has evolved to include other necessities that can’t be overlooked like cultural preservation and fostering socialization.
- Cultural preservation: It provides stories to tell the younger generation and helps them witness what festivals are.
- Economic development: The tourist attraction to various festivals generates funds through the buying and selling of local items and hospitality.
- Socialization: Through planning, execution and participation, festivals bring people together in one spirit of celebration thereby promoting unity and social bonding.
No two festivals are the same and no festival gives you the same feeling each year. Festivals are designed to create unique experiences that keep the locals and tourists coming back for more, hence leading to more development.
What is your experience with African festivals, and how else do you think they contribute to development in Africa?
